Grant Agreement

Congratulations on your grant award and welcome to John Stott Ministries (JSM)!
John Stott Ministries is dedicated to supporting outstanding Majority-World Christian leaders in pursuit of a Ph.D. To best support you, we coordinate our efforts with others who are invested in your academic goals and future ministry. This partnership is initiated and communicated by means of an annual Grant Agreement, which is a contract designed to facilitate mutually-established goals. The four parties who sign this agreement are:

This four-way relationship is intended to provide encouragement and accountability for the timely pursuit of your academic goals, while enhancing the spiritual and emotional whole of each scholar.

Roles of Participants in the Grant Agreement:

To facilitate a positive relationship on behalf of you (the scholar) and your family, we have defined the following responsibilities:
Sending Institution (Majority-World)
The Majority-World Sending Institution has a primary role in the nomination of grant candidates. Once the candidate is selected, JSM will work with this Sending Institution to set expectations for timely completion of study and the ultimate return of this scholar to the faculty of the Sending Institution. In signing this agreement, the Sending Institution is making a commitment to provide a faculty position for the respective scholar, upon the completion of his/her Ph.D. An annual plan, established by the scholar, the faculty mentor and JSM’s Academic Review Committee, will be coordinated with the Sending Institution. Special attention will be given to any overseas visits and long-distance learning arrangements. These arrangements need to be supported strategically and practically by the Sending Institution. If the Scholar is participating in long-distance learning in his/her home country, the Sending Institution will support the Scholar’s primary goals of academic achievement by monitoring the scholar’s progress and restricting outside commitments to teaching, preaching or other ministry in recognition of the current ministry goal of doctoral pursuit.

Faculty Mentor (Ph.D. Institution)
The faculty mentor will meet with the JSM scholar regularly, and will communicate with the JSM Academic Review Committee at least twice yearly to review academic progress and other areas of the scholar’s life which may impact his/her progress. The faculty mentor and scholar will set and review quarterly benchmarks as part of an overall plan for completing the Ph.D. work. Special attention will be given for any overseas visits and/or long distance learning arrangements, in order to establish joint plans, arrangements and accountability systems. The Faculty Mentor agrees to be available to JSM by phone or e-mail for discussion of issues or concerns impacting the scholar’s progress.
Academic Review Committee (JSM)
JSM’s Academic Review Committee will act as the coordinating body for the four-way contractual relationship. The Committee will meet twice-yearly with the scholar at the seminary site. The Committee will also communicate or meet with the faculty mentor in advance of these scholar meetings, to review progress and plans that have been developed. Probationary status will be considered when significant progress is not made, as determined by JSM’s Academic Review Committee in conjunction with the Faculty Mentor. Notification of possible probationary status will be given at least two quarters in advance.
The Academic Review Committee will report to the JSM Board on each scholar’s academic progress. These reports will be made at the Fall and Spring Board meetings.
Scholar
The scholar participates in this four-way relationship as outlined in the attached “Annual Grant Agreement.”
It is our belief that God has called each of the JSM scholars into this period of academic pursuit, and therefore the Ph.D. program should be viewed as your full-time commitment to ministry during the period of enrollment. Outside ministry commitments must be limited to no more than ten (10) hours a week.
Annual grants are given for a maximum of five years. The exact duration of your grant is noted in your award letter. Annual renewal of the scholarship is subject to review of your academic progress and commitment to the Grant Agreement.
Please read the attached Grant Agreement carefully. Please submit signed copies of this agreement to your faculty mentor for his/her signature and to your sending institution for a signature. All signed copies should be returned to John Stott Ministries, via mail, email or fax at the addresses shown on the Grant Agreement form. The grant we extend to you is contingent on your agreement to and return of the Grant Agreement, signed by yourself, your mentor, and your sending institution. If you have any questions regarding any of these factors, please feel free to contact the JSM office at (650) 617-0390.

Thank you! We look forward to getting to know you over the next few years.
